£« Introduction to Canadian Educational System
Inheriting the meticulous teaching style of Britain, Canada is world-renowned for its high quality education and attracts a multitude of overseas students each year. Meanwhile, each province of Canada has established its own suitable and independent educational system. The Canadian educational system features 6-8 years of primary school education, 4-7 years of high school education, 3-4 years of college education, 1-3 years of master education and 1-3 years of doctor education.
£« Comprehensive University
There are about 80-plus universities in Canada and most of them are state funded and offer bachelor, master and doctorate courses. Bachelor courses usually take three to four years. This type of universities has numerous and extensive departments and majors. The academic year usually starts from September and ends May the next year. There are two or three semesters in each academic year. Even summer has courses. Canada does not have a national college entrance examination. Each university has set up its own admission standards and evaluates each applicant. Any student from non-English-speaking countries must pass certain English tests like IELTS or TOEFL or tests carried out by the university in order to qualify himself or herself for admission into an English-speaking university.
£« University College
This type of colleges is between community institute and comprehensive university in terms of scale and normally can award bachelor degree to their graduates. They offer reasonable and extensive courses.
£« Community College
Most of them are funded by the province and offers miscellaneous courses that are oriented towards employment. The courses take about one to three years and the students would be awarded diplomas or certificates immediately upon their graduation.
£« Career College
These colleges offer employment-oriented courses that last from 9 months to 3 years. They usually maintain close relationship with big local companies and industries to provide strong recommendation services for employment after graduation. Their graduates have a higher rate of employment upon graduation.
£« High School
There are public and private high schools, of which the former are mainly oriented towards local students and mostly do not provide lodging and accommodation services while the latter are established with the sponsor by churches and some can provide lodging and accommodation services and facilities.
