Shanghai Jiao Tong University was set up in 1896. The university now has 21 schools, 2 departments directly under the university and 4 schools under a non-specialty category. At present, the university offers 55 majors at undergraduate level, 14 level-I doctor degree conferring points, 57 level-II doctor degree conferring points, 103 master degree conferring points and 4 professional master degree conferring points for Engineering Master, MBA and Agricultural Extension as well as 16 research stations for postdoctoral fellows. Currently, there are 23,200 students on full-time basis, among which 14,397 are undergraduates, 5,123 are postgraduates and 2,314 are doctors.
The university has 2,000 overseas students.

Rooms provided by the university are equipped with a bathroom, a TV set, a telephone, an air-conditioner and internet access. There are also shared kitchens, refrigerators and among others. Charges: RMB40-85/bed/day for double rooms and RMB60-125/room/day for single rooms.
